The SonoSite P17 Ultrasound Probe is a phased array transducer that emits soundwaves from 5 to 1 MegaHertz and has a scan depth of 35 centimeters. It is ideally used in transcranial doppler (TCD) ultrasound to evaluate blood flow (blood circulation) in and around the brain, and diagnose conditions such as vasospasm, sickle cell anemia, ischemic stroke, intracranial stenosis or blockage of the blood vessels, cerebral microemboli, and patent foramen ovale. It is also used in ophthalmic ultrasound as a diagnostic tool that provides instant feedback for the evaluation of various ophthalmic disorders, cardiac ultrasound to look at the size, shape, and motion of the heart, and abdominal ultrasound to help diagnose pain or enlargement and evaluate the kidneys, liver, gallbladder, bile ducts, pancreas, spleen and abdominal aorta. Another of its application is in obstetric ultrasound (also known as a prenatal ultrasound scan) to screen for and diagnose birth defects or hereditary conditions. The SonoSite P17 is compatible with the SonoSite MicroMaxx ultrasound system.
